I think your asking how to find if your sound card drivers are installed and working and if not how to find and obtain and install them for windows 98.
thats a job but I may be able to help.
First make sure that in your device manager you have actually lost the driver
start>>control panel click the system icon..select hardware tab and device manager.
if there is a ? under sound then most likely you have a driver problem.
how to find the hardware type for win 98
this will require some looking around in the registry
if you can do this it never fails
start button ...run
type ....regedit
look under hkey_local_machine>>
system>>
current control set or controlset001>>
pci>>
enum
If you get lost sometimes you can just search from the top menu for enum and keep hitting find next till you get to the hardware system current pci section
you will see a bunch of folders with vendor numbers
expand the folders one at a time
and highlight the folder under it ...then look to the right pane
it will have the desription of the hardware
keep looking throught to the next folder until you find the desription to the right that says "unknown" ...that should be the culprit.
now write down the vedor id and dev number associated with it
ven & dev
after writing down the numbers you can now close registry editor
now go to http://www.pcidatabase.com
Yeah some geek actually made a database of PCI vendor codes and devices
there you can type your vendor number in the search box
scroll down till you see your dev description number
write down the identified hardware type
then you can go to http://www.driverguide.com
for the driver
or try to search with search engine
your harware type>>drivers for win98
good luck

LOL. its been a while since ive used win98, But try going into your device manager and scan for hardware changes. if that dosent work you will need to find out what sound device is installed on your motherboard and download the correct drivers from them. Theres a huge marking on the motherboard to specify the motherboard brand and model, then you can search yahoo for a manufacturer and link to their website.

What sound card do you have? Find that and go to that website and download a new driver......
Or as a last resort go to system tools, look for system restore I forget what it is called in 98 I have my old Cd's somewhere....
Try restoring back to just before the delete, hope that helps ~A~

You will need a new driver. You can dowload one, take your PC apart and find the model # for your sound card, then type into yahoo and search for driver download. The same thing happened to me a couple months ago.

If you deleted it in "My computer - device hardware" all you have to do is reboot and Windows should find it again. The drivers should still be on the PC so Windows will automatically re-install and everything should be fine.
