Dividing Large Numbers

2016-11-11 05:57:42 · answer #2 · answered by Anonymous · 0 0

It really all depends on the numbers involved. If your divisor is 10, 100, 1000 etc it's very easy, you just slide your decimal in the dividend to the left as many places as you have 0s. So if you divided by 10, you would move the decimal one place to the left. And yes, even if your dividend is a whole number, there is still a decimal - it's after the last digit.
Sometimes you can use other facts to make division easier. If I had 42000 divided by 6000 I could use the fact that 42 divided by 6 is 7 so my answer is 7. You must pay attention to the number of 0s.420,000 divided by 6000 would be 70.
If you are using scientific notation, you don't need to write the numbers out as large. Just subtract the divisor's exponent from the dividends. (You'll still need to divide the other part of the number though).

Not sure if this is what you were looking for - but hope it helps.

You can always reduce (large) numbers to close approximations.

For example, when dividing 456789 by 567,

the answer will be very close to dividing 457000 by 570

so, its 457/57 ... this is close to 460/60 + some error because u increased the numerator by 3/457 percent (less than 1% - to be close 0.6%) and the denominator by 3/57 percent (about 5%)... so we must add 4.4% of the number to itself.

Now, 460/60 = 7.66 (simple division)
dont forget the decimals so, your answer is 766 + 4.4% of 766

4% of 766 is close to 4% of 770 = 30.8
so, 4.4% is 30.8 + 3.08 = 33.8 or 34

Add 766 and 34 to get your answer = 800

Use calculator and u see that the actual answer is 805

U can use this method if u r comfortable with numbers. If u r not, then i would not suggest u to use this method because if u forget one step, you will get totally lost.

The other way I can suggest is that when u divide, look for a close multiple of the denominator that nearly equals the numerator. For example, in our case...

567 and 456789... u can see that 5x8 = 40 and 5x9 = 45

so either u multiply 567 by 800 and then subtract the resulting number from the numerator and then redivide and add to 800

multiply 567 by 900 and subtract the nulmerator from the resulting numlber and further divisions are subtracted from 900

i.e; 567 x 900 = 510300 subtract 456789 from this

u get = 53511 divide this by 567 this is
9
5351 - 5103 = 248
for 2481 approximate... u should get 5 so u have 95 as
53511 / 567

subtract 900 - 95 = 805, which is your answer.
