Money no object...
I'm not stupid, I am not going to buy a 750cc missile for my first bike but I have been on bikes all my life, thanks to my dad, so don't want a muppet like 125cc.
Any suggestions for a nice wee starter bike? I would love a Triumph or Ducati but will get one when I have some proper riding experiance under my belt!

Chad - do you even know where you are? Answering Q's about motorbikes. Not push bikes - did you even read the q?
I can't stand people with verbal incontinence - go play on the motorway hun.

We have a Honda VT 600-C Shadow VLX. I rode it , then my wife commuted on it for a couple of years. It sits low, handles well, is liquid cooled and makes good power for a VTwin. I also think its very stylish.
BTW: Thanks for putting ( I [heart] Chad) in her place. Some of these dips got no business mingling with poite company, and certainly not in this section.

Smart choice about the 750cc. If I were you, I'd probably start with a dual-purpose bike. Essentailly they're dirt bikes with all DOT required stuff like headlights and turn signals. They are light have relatively small displacements with power high in the RPM's and take some abuse if dropped lightly. All of the big four (Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Yamaha) make bike like these. Alot of sport bikes are not very user-friendly. They have twitchy steering at low speeds and clutches that aren't forgiving. If you've got your mind set on a sportbike try on a 250 or 500cc Kawisaki Ninja for size. They are pretty light and make decent power. Obviously you're a girl, so height might be an issue as well. Ensure that your feet are solidly on the ground. Putting your foot down in a puddle of oil is bad enough, I can't imagine just using your toes. Bikes can be kinda' like shoes, you may have to try on a few pair to get a good fit. Buy some protective gear!!!!!! If money is no object get a good leather jacket, gloves, boots, pants and of course spend some time trying on a good helmet. Sometimes I swear people are actually TRYING to run you over.

The Ducati Monster 600 / 620 is one that I've heard is not a bad first bike, actually. It sounds as though you are looking at sportier type bikes, so other choices I would suggest would be the BWM F650, Buell Blast, Kawasaki Ninja 250 and 500, or Suzuki GS500. Any one of these will have enough power for freeway riding while being forgiving and predictable enough for a beginning rider.

I've been riding since age 14, and I'm WAY older than that now. I had to take a 20 year hiatus from it because I had a brain hemorrhage at age 24. When I started back, I took the MSF safety course and they used Hondas and Yamahas; 250-500 class. They were perfect for ramping me up to my Harleys, and perfect for your learning phase from the sounds of you; they'd be easy to handle but still pack some punch. Ride safe and good luck on your test!

I started out on a Kawasaki KLR650 dual sport bike. It's a really durable bike that I bought because I wanted to be able to take it offroad also. It's not a rocket but it can handle highway speeds easily. Only catch is that it is a very tall bike.

Get a used Yamaha Virago 750. It's not a missile, and it's not a muppet. Handles okay, no messy chain or water-dripping radiator. LOL.
