the centre screw on the fans has been removed but am not having any joy removing the fan its self please help

Not 100% sure what a 406 coupe fan is like but it should be prety much the same as the rest of the Peugeot range. Yes, when you remove the nut in the centre of the fan, it should pull off relatively easy. Can you not just buy a second hand fan unit and replace the whole unit, or are you just intending to replace the motor itself. Have both fans failed? If so, i find that strange and i would check the thermo switch feeding the units as i have seen this fail on a number of occasions. You can check the switch by turning the ignition on, keep your hands/fingers away from the fans and with the wires still connected to the switch which is usually on the radiator, cross them with another piece of wire, ie complete the circuit.
