Is this a problem with the format of the files, or the format of the floppy disk? The version of windows used when saving the file shouldn't affect your access to the files on later windows versions. If the floppy was not a pre-formatted one and was formatted on Windows 98, sorry to state the obvious, but you may need to find a friend with Windows 98!

Sir, unless the data on the floppy are word processing files that you created, or other information that you created from a software that was installed in WIN 98, YOU SHOULD NOT COPY ANY WIN 98 DATA INTO WIN XP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Installing the software that created the data will allow you to access the data on your floppy drive.

If you try to do it any other way, you WILL put garbage in the XP register, you will never be able to clean it out. Your system, from that point on will be on a down hill dive to crash time.

It may run a day, week, month or two, but it will CRASH!

You will have to reformat the hard drive and reinstall the Operating System!

And you can take that to the bank!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news glittershelly, but it sounds like you've got a duff floppy disk. Normally, Windows XP would have no problems reading a floppy disk that's been formatted using Windows 98.

My advice would be to find someone else with a floppy drive to see if they can open the files. Sometimes the heads on a floppy drive can become misaligned, causing it to not be able to read floppy disks correctly.

Don't be tempted to format the floppy disk as you definitely won't be able to read the information on there. (Actually, that's not strictly true. There are ways to extract data from corrupted or formatted disks but this can prove very expensive.)

Go to control panel and have a fish around there, because I did it the other day to load some old 98 stuff to XP. There's a file somewhere in there that says words to the effect of "Change [or could be 'load'] Win98 file" (or something similar) and I sincerely apologise that I can't remember exactly what I did (it was only a couple of clicks!) - but the moral of the tale is that you CAN do it! Good luck.

There should not be any problem accessing Win98 files from XP. XP is backward compatible to Win98.

From what you mentioned, it seem that your floppy is not in working condition now, that is why XP prompt you to format the floppy before using. Most likely, you will not be able to retrieve the information any more.
