I already know that replacement is an option, but I'm trying to avoid that. Any suggestions backed by experience?

Use KBS NuMetal, a 2-part epoxy putty. Works on all sorts of surfaces, even fiberglass. Simple to use. Great results!

It is like repairing a fender on a Corvette or the hull on a fiberglass boat. It can be done. But, it is an involved process. I don't have the skills and have not seen repair kits available for amateurs.
With tears and holes, the fiberglass mesh fabric has to be repaired and reinforced first. Then you have to mix up and add a gelcoat finish. It would be like trying to paint part of a wall. If you are really good, you can get the color to match.
