I often hear the title assistant these days, for people who work for someone in an office. Is it the same as a good old-fashioned secretary?

The answer to your question is yes, they are one and the same when it comes to job functions.

But to many Secretaries, the word "secretary" implies subordinate and clerical, while the word "assistant," meaning Administrative Assistant implies more of a partner and helper.

Except taht one must become a GUY or GIRL "Friday" and be adept at lots more, because of high technology in the modern office.

Thus, the position of 'secretary' has gravitated up to the position of 'asssistant'. Means that you can un-jam a printer or copier, reset either, you know several versions of Open Office, GIMP, and can 'fix' any Microsoft 'virus magnet' computer, or, get it running in Linux!

Honestly! Some firms expect you to know enough to pitch hit in the Advertising Department as a graphics artist or a LinuxCAD designer!

Or, could that only be because I am a Computer Technician, on DEC Alpha, PC, and MacIntosh systems, who started out on Univac 1060II maintenance in the USAF in the 60's, having a Category A brain, and who can type 80 wpm?

It's not important the job title, it's important what kind of job you do.

Some people showing the secretary as stupid person, who is doing typing, serving tea/coffee, ..etc and also pleasing the boss.

Now there is different job titles for the Secretary: Executive Secretary, Administrative Assistant, Coordinator...

It's important for me personally that the Efficient Secretary, whatever the title is, to be able to handle every single issue related to work, specially when the boss is not available, and to keep office secrets, that's why they called secretary: secret keeper.

The one who is only typing, I call her "typist", the one who do only tea/coffe, and stupid smiling, I call her "waitress / hostess", nothing to do with secretarial job.

assistant is bit different from a secretary while both help their boss or superior.
let's take an example:
a doctor has an assistant and a secretary. the secretary is designated to carry out all the conventional secretarial job. while the assistant, who cud b a doctor himself, helps him with his professional practice. he sees the patients, or assists him in operations and so on. so in this case the secretary and assistant have a diff job profile.
