I am assuming that you are a female. I suggest that you cover your hair, like with a scarf, and that you wear long sleeves and pants so that your legs and arms are not showing. You can do this with style, even if it's not your normal way of dressing. This will help you from being harrased by men or religious fanatics and it will give you a classy and professional look ;)

In a foreign culture, you have to be careful not to break strong taboos that they have. Do some research. Obviously, in Muslim countries, you have to be careful about how you dress.

I don't think women tourists have to wear veils but if a woman went to the countryside in Iran, for example, she might have to wear a veil.

People should be careful about things like entering holy sites in shorts, for example.

Also, it is easier and safer to go in groups where you have the protection of a guide and other personnel.

it has been a long time since i have been, but agree with the others, no shorts or tank tops, also a scarf in case you go into a holy site.
also, if people ask if you are american, say no, canadian. canadians are perceived as not having as much money so not as attractive a customer.
at least this was true when i went

in morocco people are very open and they mostly like tourists because we bring profit to them. what you wear is not very important in cities. you will probably be hassled in a way to buy something so if you don't have time to barging just smile and walk away! if you get lost in medina ask someone for direction, there are always kids around who are willing to take you to your hotel or ... for some coins or candys! if you have limited time is good to do that, or you can always to find your way out alone!
enjoy

I am not sure what you mean by --being hassled. if you are a woman, it would be better to wear tee shirts or long sleeves & pants. no tank tops or short skirts.
don't travel alone.

to avoid being hassled the main thing would be what you wear. i don't think you would have to wear a headscarf but you should cover up, try wearing loose fitted linen trousers and basic cotton tops, no cleavage! and you should be fine.
