One version by Gladys Knight & The Pips became a number-two hit in the United States in 1967.

A version by Marvin Gaye became a number-one hit in the U.S. in 1968.

The Temptations did it in 1969.

There has also been a 1970 version by Creedence Clearwater Revival, an eleven minute version which appears on their Cosmo's Factory album.

The Undisputed Truth covered it in 1971.

Other covers...
UK punk group The Slits
Tuxedomoon
Roger Troutman
Kaiser Chiefs

And let's not forget the studio singers for the fictitious clay-animated singing group The California Raisins (1988).

3 big versions of this song, the 1st by Gladys Knight in 1967, then Marvin Gaye in 1968,then Credence Clearwater Revival in 1971. Marvin Gaye had the biggest version. Ive heard that the song was written for the Temptations, but they never recorded it.
