It's sorry times now. The paper is full of sheriff sales for people that fell on bad luck, because of the high cost of living caused by our government. Check in the front of the phone book under financial assistance for county assistance office or consumer credit counseling. If they can't help they should at least get you information where you could go. Good luck.
Many more will be in the same fix this winter when they have to pay heat bills, health care, utilities, gas. At least the very richest will get a tax break. Vote the bums out.

If they did a Title 11, Chapter 7 Bankruptcy, it discharges all the prior medical bills, and all their unsecured debt. That debt gets wiped out and they don't have to pay it back. That is a start. They are also required to take a financial class to help them learn to manage their money better.

Depending on how long ago they filed for bankrupcy, they might have to file again. That's a last resort.
The first step is for them to cut out any spending that isn't necessary. Maybe medical bills can't be helped, but if it means selling a car, moving to a cheaper house, so be it.
Have them try to talk to the doctors; see if they can work out a payment plan with them.

Your question doesn't really make sense? You say your friends accumulated many doctor bills and other debts and filed bankruptcy. If they filed bankruptcy, the should no longer be "in a financial bind". Bankruptcy eliminates the debt.

If your friends already filed for bankruptcy, the legal process will sort out their financial difficulties. If they filed, they had to have attorneys to do it for them. The best advice anyone can give to someone with legal problems is "hire an attorney."
If it does not interfere with the legal process, they can seek credit counseling. Sometimes bankruptcy is the only way to get out of paying medical bills.
The only thing an anonymous individual can do is send money to your friends. Sorry, but I won't.

register with some local recruiting agency, change jobs and clear the bills slowely.
OR
apply for a credit card, repay ur bills, get a second Credit card, repay the first one and so on. In the meantime, if you have money, repay the then-current card's payment.

It is all a matter of politics. The best thing to do is become politically involved When GW and all his corporate henchmen are gone then we can start to clean up the mess they made of this country.
