I had my c-section in July of 2005, and I still have some numbness. I asked my ob/gyn about it and he said it would probably always be there. Mine is numb right on my scar and about 1/4 inch above it. He said that's because when they make the incision, they slice through nerves and that's what causes the numbness. If it's healed properly and you're not having any other problems, don't worry. :)

My first C section was 3 years ago and up until my last one which was in June I still felt that numb sensation near the scar/incision. I don't know if it's medically true or not but it seems to me that since some tissue/skin/whatever has been tampered with it should be only natural for it to feel "strange"...But that's just my opinion..don't know it for sure ! If you are concerned about it ask your Dr. He will be able to help you if necessary.

No, although the likelihood of C-section has gone way up. I was not born by C-section yet I had to have one with my first. I am aiming for a natural birth with my second (VBACs are now an option, they were likely not when you were born depending on how old you are). I do recommend avoiding an epidural if at all possible, and if you do have to have one try to get as far along as you can beforehand, epidurals slow the process and increase the likelihood of a C-section. Also, try not to birth lying down, that's what all the movies show but in reality it is not the best position. From my understanding, on all fours is best, but do research and take a birthing class. Many places offer them free or very cheap. Talk to your doctor, explain you want a vaginal birth. Make that very clear, that you do not want a C-section unless absolutely necessary to save you or the baby. Watch the doctor's response, some are knife happy, if he tries to protest at all, switch doctors. Also, labor at home for as long as you can, if you're too far from the hospital, labor close by but preferably not in the hospital. Things progress better when you're comfortable (well as comfortable as you can be in given situation) The hospital is not a good place for comfort and they will send you home until you've progressed quite a ways anyway. May as well not waste the gas. Try to walk until you get down to pushing, now that's a lot easier said than done...trust me, but it'll be worth it. And if worse case scenario you do end up with a C-section, it really isn't that bad. By no means would I encourage anyone to choose it. But it isn't something to fear. If it happens, don't get down on yourself about it. I really tore myself up about it because I felt like such a failure at first. But then I realized that it was necessary because if I hadn't had it my daughter would have died. I'd rather have a scar than not have my daughter.

I had a c-section in Nov 05 and i have numbness from my scar to about 3 inches up still. All of my friends who have had c-sections say they still have numbness to some extent..It's totally normal. I believe it has something to do with the nerves being damaged.

My wife does. After 3 of them, there is a LOT of scar. Its been 19 years since her last one.
I think all large scars are numb, I have a few on knees and such from accidents/surgeries, and they are all numb too. An irritating sort of numb.

I had two and it took a long time for the numbness to go, but it should eventually. Don't worry about it.
