Many athletes, dancers and actors swear by a method of adopting a correct posture known as the Alexander Technique. It involves bringing the head, neck and spine into a particular alignment where the whole body works at maximum efficiency. I had a desk-bound job once which led to bad pain in the lower and upper back, and I found this technique helped to reduce it. Details at http://www.alexandertechnique.com/

Correct posture is keeping your back/spine straight when standing or sitting to aid you do this try walking around balancing books on your head this will encourage a straight back/posture. As for sleeping it is difficult to maintain a correct posture as you may move around a lot during the night due to dreams.
