Bass guitar is bigger than a regular guitar and has a longer fretboard. It usually has 4 strings, but some unusual ones can have 12 or more strings (very rare). There are a lot of electric guitars out there. You would be best off to find someone that you know that already plays guitar and go to a music store or check in your local paper for a good quality used instrument. Take your friend along when you check it out to make sure that it is a decent used electric guitar. There are different "scale lengths" on a guitar, so if you have smaller hands you will want to probably go with the shorter scale length. You might be best off to rent a guitar in the beginning, but definitely try to find yourself a qualified teacher with an emphasis on the word "qualified". Lots of people say they are guitar teachers, but some are much better than others. If you don't like one teacher, don't quit - try a different teacher. There is plenty you can learn online about guitar, so check the Internet for information. If you are getting an electric guitar you will need an amplifier. Tube amplifiers are considered to sound the best, but for a beginner any decent amp will do. Get the best guitar that you can afford. You can get a professional quality guitar, used, for about $500 with a case, but you can often find a "starter" guitar for $200 or even less. Then email me - I'm a guitar teacher, among other things. I can help you out a little bit, and am very good with beginners. And start hanging around with guitar players. Most of them are delighted to share what they know with beginners.

Best way is to start with a classical guitar. Do not need amps or so to sound good. Further you learn how to read the notes.
If you go on and want to get an electric guitar, go to a store and try several different guitars. Choosing a guitar is very personal. One likes to play a Fender, another one prefers Gibson or Ibanez.

A bass is a 4 or 5 string guitar (normal has 6 or 7) and the notes are way lower than a "normal" guitar

A Bass is a four string Electric guitar that is much deeper in sound. If you are getting your first Electric Guitar, (I'm saving up for my second one!) you should go a Fender-Squier stratocaster or some Gibson-Epiphone model, as they are cheaper than others without sacrificing quality. You will also need an amp, so you should buy a pack with amp, lead, guitar and all. They start at $500 for Guitar, lead, amp, picks, instructional book all in one pack. Go forth and learn how to shred!!!

an electric guitar usually has 6 or 7 strings and plays in the treble clef.. a bass guitar usually has 4 or 5 strings (thick strings) and plays in the bass clef.

a Fender Stratocaster is usually a good beginner guitar, Shecter is a really good brand though if you decide to stick with it.

I'd get one of those value packs. Comes with a guitar, amp, video, chord chart(SOME), and pretty much everything else you need. Strat copies are really good starter electrics. As for amps Line 6 makes the best. The Spider line is really great.
