Please consult an architect in your area before going for roof gardening.
The important factors are:
Load bearing capacity of the roof slab.
Is it load bearing brick walls?
Is the roof slab stands on pillar foundation?
Is it single floor house or multiples?
The roof garden brings in heavy weight to bear of the roof slab and it is very essential to know these factors before going in for roof gardens.

Two important precautions... one is the slab weight loading and the other is water proofing

Ensure there is no seepage in the terrace
Ensure that the roots of the plants you want to grow do not penetrate the ceiling
And ensure that if you want to grow plants in pots, they do not even by accident fall on the heads of persons down below!

Water Proofing, and doing it right. Apart from that, how much weight it can hold.
