Sachin is the better batsman....by far! Steve is the better player ... by a good distance!
Sachin's batting record speaks for itself.....he is the best baatsman of the modern era and definately in the top 5 of all time (with Bradman, Sobers, Lara and Richards).
Steve was an excellent batsman but a great all round cricketer and leader. He saved his best contributions for when the team really required it and he lead the team by example. While not loved by all, he embodied the fighting spirit which made the team the best (in terms of statistical success) of all time.
If I had to choose between them my head would pick Steve but my heart would pick Sachin.

as cricket is accounted on tests rather than one days, let's see both these players' performances in test cricket.
Captaincy:
We all have to believe Steve Waugh is way better than Sachin, where the former led australia to number of record wins.
Player vs player:
Steve Waugh is a great player, with a lot of consistencies and also Sachin is a world class player but less consistent compared to Steve. Sachin is nice to watch. To wrap up, if you are strictly speaking who is an efficient cricket player, then it is Steve Waugh.

I am an Indian and I will always be with them. But fair enough I say Sachin is better than Steve Waugh. Sachin has a lot of records which is very hard to be broken. I will always be with Sachin as he is the only cricketer I love the most. And I will alwaays do till he retires.

Record is just nothing when it doesnt serve any good especially Sachin's record runs still didnt win them a world cup but EVERY SINGLE RUNS AND MOVE TOOK BY STEVE WAUGH IS WORTH COZ HE GUIDED TEAM WHICH WAS INITIALLY STRUGLING SO HARD TO PLAY THEIR LEAGUE MATCHES TO FINALLY WIN THE 1999 WORLD CUP AND BE STILL THE CHAMPIANS
For me its S. Waugh (I wont be dare to dream even that Austria will escape the defeat in Semis against South Africa when Lance Klusner(The player of the tournament of 1999) is on crease after smashing two consecutive fours and just one run needed for win and not even the D. Fleming wher he was crying before he bowl his third deliver which in turn guided their way to draw the match because of brilliant fielding move set by S. Waugh to go all the way to Finals and win the cup accordingly)

steve waugh was a captain and yet great batsman. in his last test at sydney, he saved a series loss for aussies against india.
in the same test match sachin made 200+ runs but waugh's innings of mere 80 stood out for me.
