They are usually born into it.
The whole idea behing religion is you believe without questioning. From that point of view, studying first is not necessary. Every religion pretty much denies the existence of all other religions. This is to answer your question.
However, if you're not born into one or not satisfied with it, of course, the best way to go is study and pick.

I think most do it because they want to fit in, or were raised in that religion. I personally took the time to research and attend a few before I made the choice. I chose a non-denominational Christian church that sticks to the Bible. Otherwise, you're taking chances...eternally. This was a great question, thank's for letting me share what I've learned. :)

Because that is not necessary - most people are brought up with the religion of their parents and choose to continue with that believe system when they are adults.

before believing in any religion I have bought big book about all known religions in the world. I have thoroughly studied it and desided what is best for me.
Also I have went to Muslim preacher, to Christian preacher and to Buddhistic preacher. There i have spend one year of my life (three years altogether) and only then I was sure what is the best religion.

People don't generally pick a religion at all, they are more or less born into one and raised so by their parents.

Good question. People are usually indoctrinated into their religion by their parents before being capable of choosing themselves

It's easy to pick something your familiar with. It's difficult to do research and choose after you've gained enough knowledge to choose wisely. But there's realy now reason to research since anyone you choose, if your agree with it enough, will make you happy. And people really just want to be happy in the end.

From my experience as a cradle Catholic, I never had to search for a religion. I accepted the teachings of the Church as the truth and once you have the truth there is no need to look at anything else. When they train bank tellers, they do not show them a bunch of counterfeit money to watch out for. They show them the real thing...everything else is counterfeit. That is how I feel about my faith, to me it is the real thing.

They are too brainwashed and lazy to change. Their religion "picked" them based on the geographical area they were born.
