In the middle of Rome’s Piazza Navona is the famous Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, designed by Bernini. What do the four characters represent, and, contrary to a popular legend, why is one of its faces covered by a veil?

Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (fountain of 4 rivers)--at the four corners are colossal figures representing the Danube, Ganges, Nile, and Plata. Because students of Bernini carved the statues, and the church facade in the Piazza (Sant' Agnese in Agone) was designed by Borromini, Bernini's rival, some people think the statues pained expressions (and the "Nile" covering his eyes) are a comment on how ugly they think the church facade is.*

.........this is the popular legend, I don't know of another explanation for Nile's veil.
