He's quite well known, a very interesting person, and wrote some wonderful poetry as well as novels - Siegfried Sassoon - one of the First World War poets.
Or how about the author Henry Williamson - famous for 'Tarka the Otter', but also wrote a series of amazing semi autobiographical novels about the first part of the twentieth century, and is a somewhat controversial figure.

I would suggest Sylvia Plath or Ted Hughes but they're pretty heavy stuff! so dont!
T.S. Eliot is a really good choice as he is a nobel prize winner(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T.S._Eliot) but I would prefer Tennessee Williams(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tennessee_Williams) or even better Chinua Achebe(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinua_Achebe) who despite that he was very well educated wrote in simple english for his tribe to understand and also his novels include historical facts which would impress your teacher!!!
I hope I was a help if you need anything contact me! :)
P.S. at the bottom of every article in Wikipedia there are external links. Visit those for further info. Use www.sparknotes.com to get an analysis of the poems/plays/novels you are writing about. Dont forget to use quotations from the piece you are writing about as well as the main themes of the writer's works. That reaaaaally will impress ur teacher.

Try Gerard Manley Hopkins at : http://www.bartleby.com/people/HopkinsG.html
All of the above are really good suggestions too. I especially like Rabindranath Tagore. Info about him can be found at: http://www.bartleby.com/65/ta/Tagore-S.html
In fact the http://www.bartleby.com page can be really useful in doing all sorts of homework.
Good luck
