As I understand it it sank because to many compartments in the hull were breached. If there had just been one almighty smash would it and the passengers survived

( Yes, I know Rose and Jack would probably been killed coz they were up at the stern )

The 1st 2 compartments would have collapsed and the ship would have survived the ship was designed to float with 3 compartments flooded. There would have been many injures from going 25 mph to zero in a second. All that furniture that wasn't bolted down flying forward ouch!! I have a theory that if 1or2 compartments were flooded at the back of the ship it might have settled evenly and not allowed the water to flood over the next compartment which is what happened.

Yes, I have heard this theory too, and I see nothing wrong with it. More specifically, when the ship turned, the iceberg scratched a big chunk of the hull on the side of the ship, which is what opened up multiple compartments. If she had simply rammed, then much more damage it terms of the amount of metal that got twisted into a pretzal may have been sustained, but not to multiple compartments, so it would have been able to stay afloat.

rose and Jack were at the bow.
The idea of water compartments was for it to take a long time to sink but as you say many compartments got damaged so it sunk quickly.had it taken a long time to sink there would have been time to save most of the people but it sunk quick. The main cause was that the steel in the hull was high in sulphur making it brittle and the steel shattered .

Yes, Titanic like many ships is broad sided, so when faced with an obstacle, the best thing to do is to hit it with the least amount of surface area on the ship as possible, therefore that being the haul.

Then the ship would of had to backup and go around it.

Yes you have some sense there. Ramming the iceberg might have put the Titanic on top of the iceberg. Then they will just have to wait to be rescued. Then everybody happy cause nobody would have died. Great idea. You ought to have been the Captain of that great ship.

I thought about this, I believe the ship would have not sunk, The damage would have been localized to the bow only. The sealed compartments then would have done their job and kept the ship afloat, or at least long enough for help to arrive !!!!!!!!!!!!

It would have sustained a lot of damage as well but then again ... Maybe not as bad as what it took on its flank! One would hope the unsinkable wouldn't have sunk then and as for Rose and Jack ... Well ... Yes good movie but i still prefer the original one!

It would have killed everyone on impact or most of them would have died from the crash.

Hitting an iceberg is like hitting concrete walls, they do not give at all.

Of course, if the captain had listened to the reports, they could've avoided the icebergs to begin with.
