Our cultures are different and after all we did drop two atomic bombs on them. However you cannot group all individuals of a race as "all the same". In my opinion it would be a plus for you to learn any foreign language...especially Japanese. What better way for you to understand their culture and bridge the gap. I think that learning their language will be just the beginning of a fascinating journey for you.
The possibilities are endless!

Learning Japanese may not be easy, but a lot of Japanese ADORE American culture. Some don't, but many do. After WWII when they figured out that the Empire had lied to them about the Americans and what they would do (eat their children, etc.) they adopted lots of American culture. Its a very modern, very advanced culture. Go for it.

I don't think its foolish to learn Japanese. You can always learn about something. Japanese don't hate Americans, they just feel shy because most of them can't really speak English properly. That is why they tend to avoid foreigner.

Japan as America is multi-racial and multi-cultural country. The only thing you will face is the exact kind of racism some people face in America, i.e. only by some foolish not educated imbeciles. I would looove to learn Japanese and perhaps I'm taking a course in the uni. My suggestion is take Japanese as I believe Japan is a great industrial and economical power; in a couple of decades we will be forced to learn Japanese and they won't have to speak english!

It's not foolish to learn any language, but it then must be used in order to "keep it".
Without usage much vocabulary will fade.
If you do decide and learn the language, plan to associate yourself with Japanese, either socially or in your career.
Keep in mind that it will come slowly. In one year you should be able to converse, in a limited way, in a few "fields" of conversation.
Think of conversation among friends about the Internet. A vocabulary of it's own.
Travel, restaurants, transportation, hotels, etc. Another vocabulary.
Family, another vocabulary.
Business or office. Another vocabulary. ETC.
This is the way we learn as children. Different subjects as we experience them.
Start now. It may take about 4 years and yet one learns continually.
One beauty in learning a foreign language is the ability to read their literature. A whole new comprehension is garnered without "someone elses" translation. I fouind this with "Dante's Inferno". I just couldn't translate it to English with my feelings. Same with some Latin literature.
It will be rewarding.
Good luck.

No Its not foolish perhaps difficult but if you plan to spend time in Japan then it will be worthwhile. Also as Japan owns about a third of your country it may well be in your own interests to learn your future masters language. The Japanese only surrendered in 1945 in a military sense.Ever since, to them business is war and they are ***-whupping the world.

When I look at this question, I laugh. Seriously. :) I live in Hawaii where the majority are Japanese and they’re all really nice people. ^ ^ Besides, being bilingual will give a huge advantage in many kinds of jobs. Go for it, good luck!!
