If eggs were rectangular, they would be weak in the middle of the side walls, as well as being very uncomfortable to lay. The strongest shape of all is a ball, or sphere. But if eggs were spherical, they would just roll away downhill, never to be seen again. So one reason that eggs are the shape that they are is that they'll roll in a circle around the pointed end. and come to a stop with the pointed end facing uphill. In fact, the eggs of birds that have their nests on cliffs are more oval and less spherical than the eggs of birds that nest on the ground. So the very-oval eggs of these cliff-nesting birds will roll in a tight little circle, and be less likely to roll out of the nest.

Another advantage of egg-shaped eggs is that they fit together quite snugly in the nest, with only quite small air spaces between them. So the eggs radiate their heat onto each other, and keep each other warm, and also, you can fit more eggs into the nest.

Why are eggs egg-shaped?

Answer:
This question seems like a tough one to crack, but scientists have one very sensible theory: the ovoid shape gives an egg its incredible strength! You can see this amazing power firsthand with a simple experiment. First, remove any rings on your fingers and slip on a rubber glove. Then wrap your fingers around an egg and squeeze really, really hard while trying to apply equal pressure to all sides of the egg. If this demonstration is done correctly, even Arnold Schwarzenegger couldn't crack it. Why? Because of something the egg has in common with famous works of architecture like the Pantheon in Rome, Italy. This monument has survived for nearly 2,000 years because it's shaped like a three-dimensional arch, a domed, egg-like shape that's one of the strongest architectural designs in the world. When an object is placed on top of it, no single point in the dome supports the entire weight; instead, the object's heaviness is carried down along the curved walls to the dome's wide base. This, of course, works best when you apply similar pressure to all sides of the dome. If your egg breaks, it's most likely because one of your fingers applied greater pressure to the shell than the others.

Many scientists also believe that the egg is shaped the way it is because this enables it to roll in a circular path along its most pointed end (which really comes in handy for birds laying eggs in high places; there's far less danger of the egg rolling out of its nest). Additionally, the ovoid shape is probably a lot more comfortable for a bird to lay than, say, a sphere or a cylinder. But whatever the reasons for an egg's shape, we can all be grateful for it--I mean, how else would it fit into egg cups and containers in our refrigerator doors?

Not all eggs are oval, some are circular. The oval shape is found in mainly ground-laying birds because when they roll, they roll in a circle and not in a straight line. Try for yourself!

when the hen lays the egg, the path should be open progressively. The shape of the egg will ease the process of egg laying and the hen will feel less pain.

Not all eggs are, but spheres and ovoids are quite strong and a great deal easier to pass from the body than most other shapes.

oval?
the longer the diameter of the egg, the more comfort the newborn will get. Also good for hatching, it takes time to hatch one chick, and to release one body part one by one,it's an ideal shape.

because for the same voulme the diameter of opening required to push out the egg by hen is less in case of oval.. God was an engineer dear... :) He even cared for hens.. cant imagine how much he cared for humans....
