Keep in mind these are the people who spends their entire day inside a 2X2 or 3X3 "cell" calling people every minute earning less pay then some janitors, so I'd usually decline politely before hanging up.

Strange - I was just thinking about this, because there was a letter in the paper recently from a young person who was trying to fund her studies by doing this job, and asking people to be nicer to telemarketers, because she was often reduced to tears. I felt sorry for her, but I do hate being 'cold called'! I've registered with the TPS, so I don't get calls any more, but prior to that, the best response was 'I've already got one' (whatever it is!).

Why should I be annoyed? They're only doing their jobs. They could be members of our families. Telemarketing is a tough job.
So I usually give them time to tell their story and politely reject their offers if I'm not interested.

First, I'm polite. I tell them usually something like "sorry, but this is totally and completely uninteresting for me".
if they accept this - ok. but most don't, and this is the point were it gets quite annoying for me.
sometimes, I ask them where they have my contacts from and if they know that this kind of selling is illegal. most get the point then. (it is illegal to make cold calls, this means not being referrered for or having opt'ed in somewhere/when).

Annoyed, yes.
Rude??? I just tell them to wait a minute. Then I put down the phone and don't go back until I hear the sound of it being off the hook. Then I hang it up.

Yes, I'm annoyed by them. I'm not really rude, but I tell them I'm not interested and then hang up. They won't take no for an answer so there's no point in staying on the line.

I just hang up. I do feel a little bad since most of them do it for a living, but I shouldnt have to suffer.

Yup. One time, I was so polite, I didn't say anything at all...really, I just ignored the guy and then hung up. That's what he gets for waking me up!
