Often there is, because until very recently SSANs were practically public information, appearing in court documents, internet directory listings, credit card statements, driving licenses, etc. So you can often find them out just by Googling, or going to PACER (if they have been involved in a court case, or in bankruptcy)

Various Web sites such as http://www.whitepages.com connect to people search services that for a small fee will check public records. If you have proper reason you can get a credit check on someone.

If you are an employer, you can attain it for business purposes. In fact, it is a necessity. You may also send away for the original social security applications of dead folks when researching family trees and the like. Law enforcement may also obtain the information in the course of investigations. The IRS can also obtain it by making you put it on forms for the purposes of taxes. You are also free to simply ask somebody.

However, in the event that your interest is more nefarious in nature and while I will not outright lie and claim, "No, there is no legal way to obtain it," I will instead draw as much attention to this post as the current administration would see fit to use to trace your data.

Social security numbers are confidential and are not given to any person except when there is a court order or when needed in investigations.

My first question is why? My next is aren't you happy with your own? My third, what business is it of yours?
Sorry, that is not something that you need to have.
I don't think unless you are a financial institution, employer, husband or wife there is much hope in this.
I've had my identity stolen and this is not a fun question for anyone who has been through that. It's taken me years to get my life back to normal...so forgive me for not understanding why you would want this information. It is really none of your business.

Often they are available in city and/or county public records searches. Communities will scan documents in without blacking out SSN's and you can pull up the documents and see someone's number no problem. Try it with your own. It's frightening how stupid they've gotten, violating one privacy law to comply with Freedom of Information & Free Records acts.

If you are working for a bank or something, and have to ask for it in order to verify personal information about someone.
Of course, you are not allowed to obtain it without the knowledge of the person whose it is.
