I'll add that in the 80's they tried to go to digest format like Archie did. Clearly they were unsuccessful. I believe it was a combination of things, more than just a "slump in the comic book industry". Included would be the baby bust, a "more sophisticated" parent (take that w/ a grain of salt) and more options w/ CaTV becoming popular.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harvey_Comics
"Due to the slump in the comic book industry, Harvey stopped publishing in 1982-86. There was talk of licensing their characters to Marvel Comics.
The original Harvey company was sold in 1990, and became Harvey Entertainment. They published comics in the early-1990s as Harvey Classics. Harvey Entertainment was now owned by Classic Media, which licenses characters from the Harvey library"

Richie's riches vanished during the tech-bubble bust of the 90's, and recent outsourcing. He now works in a sweatshop in China, sewing sneakers for pennies a day.
I know the company went under long ago, but the comics can still be found through collectors.
