What's best is subjective, but.... I wouldn'thave Norton or any Symantec program as a gift. I would rather pay for something slim and effective such as AVAST! (yes I know it is free but you take my point) others as mentioned are Nod32 (buy it, it goes towards development) and Kapersky

What ever it is but not Norton or any of the symantec, becuase I am currently having a 3 gb ram and still the computer is not as fast as it should be with a norton or symantec software my PC is p4 dual core as well. The one I would recommend id Tren Micro internet security, this is the one I use, Mcafee is OK but not better than trend micro. I know you r searching for something thats free, so the one I know is AVG & if you looking to use something temporary for free the excellant one is window live OneCare which has a 90 days trial I think. Not tried it but it is from Microsoft.

NOD 32 works like a charm. It isn't as well known as Norton or Kaspersky or any other leading antivirus because it is a fairly recent one. It has passed the test that all antiviruses go through with 100% record and no hiccups. The updates happen instantaneously and it uses almost no system recourses. Download 30 day trial from website or Softpedia then search around for the NOD fix program which shall increase the trial by i dunno...um...300 year or so no joke!! thats why I have it, it is good and also you ca find a way of getting it free!!

If its free it does not mean it's not worth dowloading. They are and can function better than licensed ones but features are limited. I have used free AVG Antivirus and Free Ewido Antispyware.
