This is hard to write about, but this girl, who has been my best friend for 8 years, did not invite me to her wedding. I live in Maine and she lives in Vt., but got married in N. Carolina last May. When she first told me about the wedding she said she knew I "probably couldn't afford to go but was invited." It then slowly shifted to not being invited. I am an alcoholic who for years has been struggling to get and stay sober. She made the comment that there would be way too much drinking at her wedding and she "wouldn't put me in that situation." I am not the type of person who would get smashed and do anything embarrassing to her or myself at a function like this, and I have stood by her in every problem she has ever had. This really hurt me and I feel quite disconnected from her now. She had even said the wedding was going to be so small that she was not having a maid of honor, but she did, and obviously it was not me. Am I being overly sensitive or was she being cruel?

I can see how it would hurt you, but I think she was trying to "protect" you. I would ask her about it and she what she says.
I would be mad too but I think she was just looking out for which is exactly what a best friend is for. :]

I hope this helped a little.

:]

Since she brought up your drinking, it must have been a concern.

Maybe you should take this as a wake-up call.

During my drinking days, several times, despite my promises, my drinking colored an occasion. The potential for something to go wrong is always there, and she might have been more concerned about something happening in front of her new in-laws. It was her day and she can't be blamed for trying to keep it as risk-free as possible.
