To attend a particular school with an international reputation in their field
To study under a particular person with an international reputation in their field
To make inroads in a country they hope to live in after completing their education
To have experience to add to their resume
Why would anyone pass up the opportunity to study abroad?

you should ask Why DO so many people study abroad? instead of "are"..I think many people go abroad to study and gain values and perspectives from other cultures around the world.

Because they are kids who think that it will help gain some insight in humanity and gain a different prespective on life. They feel like they are doing something for the world and themselves but most just want to get drunk and sleep with people from other cultures.

People can learn to be independent. They'll become more mature as they need to take care of themselves in aboard where their parents are not being with them all the time.
It's also giving a great time for them to miss each other beside study aboard gain more live experience and if you go for UK or US it'll be more prestigious as they're being recognized by all over the world....
