well, you see, the town he was riding to, was amsterdam. and yankee doodle, well he smoked a little too much of the hash, and started trippin balls, and thought the feather was in fact, pasta.

as for sticking it in his hat, he was hungry from all the hashish, and wanted to save some for later.

Yankee Doodle was a song written in Britain to make fun of Americans, (btw, we didn't get the joke b/c it was wildly popular in the states.) The feather refers to how colonial people would wear feathers in their hats. Macaroni was a word that in those days meant someone who dressed in such a fashion that was considered gawdy or "a little bit overboard"

Macaroni is a slang term for one bad mutha fu#@er. In Silver Streak with Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder, Pryor makes Wilder into a black dude using shoe polish, a hat, a hand-held radio and shades. When Wilder passes the guards he says, "I'm bad, I'm bad. I'm a macaroni!" Clearly he was attempting to be down with it.

Hence Yankee Doodle was clearly a crack head meth fiend and in order not to be thought of as whack for putting a feather in his cap, he simply called himself macaroni. He was implying that the act of feather addition to one's head wear made him 'bad'. In reality it didn't do to much and poor ol' Doodle rode off, limp schlong and all with no ladies and no one believing he was bad, hip or a 'macaroni'.
