Yes, you should be able to drive through Canada by yourself. Perhaps you are a minor and that is why you are asking, but if you have a full drivers license, and proof you were employed in ALaska, and where you are going, all should be well.
Another answerer mentioned the ferry .... that would be an alternative, not sure where it leaves from, but it comes in to Bellingham, WA. It's a bit spendy, but so will be the gas driving all the way through Canada. It's an awesome trip, too! Look in to it!

Do you have a full driver's license? Any felony convictions? Those are the questions that get the most people turned back. There may be items you'd have to pay a steep duty on, so I recommend contacting the nearest Canadian port of entry in advance. Make sure you keep your proof of citizenship and the entry fee handy when you re-enter the States.

Whoever told you that is stupid. Do you have a valid driver's licence? Do you have a passport? Can you enter Canada legally? If so, you can drive through.
