The usual cause of a headache is an indicater which most people are aware of.. the stiffness or tightness of the neck muscles. When dealing with an area that high , we are talking about involvement with the cranial nerves. When those muscle tighten up, there is going to be a pulling on whatever those muscles attach to.. meaning bones, vertebrae and skull.
The cranial nerves are one part of the autonomic nervous system, which is a balance for the other part. When they become imbalanced, there are multiple symptoms beside the headache. Vision can be distorted, eyes become intollerant of light, etc. The reason being there is dilitation of the blood vessels as well as the pupils of the eyes. Should this condition continue untreated, will eventually result in most of the 12 cranial nerves becoming inflamed and result in the numerous symptoms indicated in the typical Migraine Syndrome.
There is need to discover why those muscles in the neck are tightening and have it treated accordingly.. The most common cause is postural. The body will adapt to most conditions to get aways from pain, as well as attempt to maintain the head directly above the feet. A self examination can determine if posture is the problem..just by looking in the mirror one can see if one shoulder is lower than the other, can see if the head is tipped more to one side..You can further determine the extent of rotation of the head from one side to the other.. there will be restriction on one side for each person who suffers from headaches.
More criteria can be fed to you if you find this to be evident in your case.. I am reachable.

Most headaches happen outside the skull, in the nerves, blood vessels, and muscles that cover the head and neck. The muscles or blood vessels can swell, tighten, or go through other changes that stimulate or put pressure on the surrounding nerves. These nerves send a rush of pain messages to the brain, which brings on a headache.
Some of the many potential headache triggers include:
certain medications (headaches are a potential side effect of some)
too little sleep or sudden changes in sleep patterns
skipping meals
becoming dehydrated
being under a lot of stress
having a minor head injury
using the computer or watching TV for a long time
menstruation
experiencing changes in hormone levels
taking a long trip in a car or bus
listening to really loud music
smoking
smelling strong odors such as perfume, smoke, fumes, or a new car or carpet
drinking or eating too much caffeine (in soda, coffee, tea, and chocolate)
consuming certain foods (such as alcohol, cheese, pizza, chocolate, ice cream, fatty or fried food, lunch meats, hot dogs, yogurt, aspartame, or anything with the seasoning MSG)
In some cases, headaches are caused by certain infections, such as:
ear infections
flu
Lyme disease
sinus infections
strep throat
urinary tract infections

stress unbalanced diet too much caffiene not enough sleep poor eyesight estrogen withdrawal etc etc etc
If you experienced stiff back and neck and elsewhere though i'd get it checked out by a professional
However it could be something very simple such as the pain causing you to tense so much for a fair amount of time that all of your muscles were stiff from being in a contracted state over a period of time... just dont mess around with it if it happens again... GO GET IT CHECKED OUT

The reason of a headache in most cases is psychological. We suppress own impulses, and as result - a headache. For example, I've been offended by my boss, but I've kept a silence. All rage was inside - and as a result a headache began ... During attacks of a headache make one easy exercise. On the paper write all characteristics of the headache, for example, malicious, unexpected and others. And then for each characteristic it is necessary to think up a situation where this characteristic is very useful. For example, to surprise it is necessary to be unexpected. And so for each characteristic. Try and than say whether it works!

you could have vision problems, be overstressed, or be ill. it's also possible you have a wrenched back or neck and don't know it, and it's pulling all your muscles out of shape.
