The events of 28.06.1914, the assassination of the Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo, sparked the "Great War", later called the "First" world war. The fact that the problems that caused it were never really resolved sparked the "Second" world War, which was never fully resolved.
The conflict which started in the Balkans in the early twentieth century was still being fought out during the 1990's. The Palestinian/Israeli problem, is a result of the Balkans Conflict and European racism in the mid 20th century.
The Second World War, was a continuation of the First. Different politics, same nationalist cr*p.

The Second World War was caused by:
a. Hitler’s Aims
1.To unite German speaking people (using NSD which had been denied at the Treaty of Versailles.
2.He wanted lebensraum (living space) in order to gain self-sufficiency (autarky)
3.He wanted to dominate Europe and the World
To achieve any of these aims would involve breaking the Treaty of Versailles (28/6/1919), and this could lead to war.
b. The aggression of Hitler’s Allies
Italy – Mussolini wanted a Fascist-Roman empire in the Mediterranean and Africa (e.g. Abyssinian invasion in 1935.)
Japan – Japan wanted a Nipponese empire in the Pacific, extending into China and Australia (e.g. Manchurian invasion in 1931)
Germany, Italy and Japan were hostile to Communism (USSR), and this way a cause of war and vice versa
c. Democratic powers were passive
USA – Isolated
France – France was unlikely, and reluctant, to intervene against Germany, because she could not rely on Britain’s and America’s support.
Britain – Between 1934 and 1937, Britain was sympathetic to German recovery. Between May 1937 and March 1939, Britain appeased Germany.
These powers could have stopped Fascist aggression earlier than 1939
d. The League of Nations failed to keep peace
Conclusion
War was caused by a combination of ‘a’ to ‘d’, but Hitler’s aims and actions were the main cause of war.

because of WW1
the sanctions taken against the Germans in the Versailles Treaty were much too severe
-they were forced to recognise guilt for starting the war although this was not entirely true
-they were forced to give land to their neigbours
-they were forced to pay an enormous amount in debts.
This led to a loss of pride and a serious economical crisis in Germany. Then along came Hitler who seemed to rectify all this
After that the Germans followed their leader anywhere with almost blind faith, even to war!!

The First World War ended with the practical paralysis and economical annihilation of Germany, the principal defeated one. That lead to thoughts of revenge which greatly helped Hitler in his way to power. Once he took it, he strengthened the army and made real show-offs, additionally supporting Mussolini in his African claims. At first, the democratic powers tried an appeasement policy which derived, firstly, in the lack of intervention in the Spanish Civil war, and in 1938, it led to hand in the Sudetenland to Germany, a clear attack against Checoslovakia's sovereignty which led to its total invasion in 1939. After that, Hitler started claiming Danzig's corridor, and the Allies decided not to leave Poland alone.

Commonly held general causes for WWII are the rise of nationalism, the rise of militarism, and the presence of unresolved territorial issues. Fascist movements emerged in Italy and Germany during the global economic instability of the 1920s, and consolidated power during the Great Depression of the 1930s. In Germany, resentment of the Treaty of Versailles — specifically article 231 (the "Guilt Clause") —, the belief in the Dolchstosslegende, and the onset of the Great Depression fueled the rise to power of the militarist National Socialist German Workers Party (the Nazi party) of which Adolf Hitler was the leader. Meanwhile, the Treaty's provisions were laxly enforced from fear of another war. Closely related is the failure of the British and French policy of appeasement, which sought to avoid or postpone another war but actually encouraged Hitler to become bolder. The USSR's signing of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact freed Germany of fear of reprisal from the Soviet Union when Germany invaded Poland. The League of Nations, despite its efforts to prevent the war, relied on the Great Powers to enforce its resolutions and was unable to prevent the start of The Second World War.
Japan in the 1930s was ruled by a militarist clique devoted to becoming a world power. Japan invaded China in 1937 to bolster its meager stock of natural resources. The United States and Britain reacted by making loans to China, providing covert military assistance, and instituting increasingly broad embargoes of raw materials against Japan. These embargoes would have eventually forced Japan to give up its newly conquered possession in China because the Japanese would not have enough fuel to run their war machine. Japan was faced with the choice of withdrawing from China or going to war with the United States in order to conquer the oil resources of the Dutch East Indies. It chose the latter, and went ahead with plans for the Greater East Asia War in the Pacific.
