I would say, " Why not? We can go out for an ice cream."...and then when you get there at the ice cream place....ask him to bring the ice cream to the car, because you don't want people to think you guys are on a date. I pulled that one on one of my long time male friends....but it was pizza- not ice cream. Then next time he surprised me with a Japanese dinner invite...he said we were just going for a ride....I sat there and had him order....he ordered food for worth about a hundred DM (former German money)...the chef was preparing the food right in front of us....when everything was on the table....I said, " Gosh,....why didn't you tell me....I already had dinner before you picked me up!" Needless to say...that was the last time he tried anything with me. We are still friends.

I have had that exact situation! I told him that I was really flattered, but that I wasn't ready to give up my independence. I didn't want to have a boyfriend at the time -- not him or anyone else. I just wanted to maintain our friendship the way it was. He accepted that and we've managed to remain friends.

If you would rather stay friends then say so. Either way, be honest.

Say that out openly. If he/she has been friends a long time, you shud be in a postion to dicuss things frankly and warmly.

you could say something cliche like "I don't want to hurt the friendship we have" or you could take a risk and say yes
