It depends on what you are into. Do you like superhero's? Love stories, etc? Teen stuff?

If you say so, i'll help you pick out something good to start with!

Alrighty

Not so new, but 'modern';

Graphic Novel; Sin City. I collect these myself and it's a good read. A little graphic but has good action, characters and stories.

New;
Boondocks (as suggested below); Funny political humor.

The Runaways; Teenage superheros. Has some "romance" if you can even call it that. Great drawings, and relatible characters.

(cheaper paperbacks can be found at bookstores!)

I'm still looking around, whatever I find i'll put here.

The DC universe just went through another crisis reset, so everything is probably somewhat readable, not much time has passed for any previous storylines to get overly complicated.

Of the regular titles, I think ION is brand new- so you could probably jump in and start reading without needing to read a years's worth of earlier stuff. There's also a new Supergirl, so you could probably just start reading that.

The Civil war series from Marvel is only 4 issues old- that's not too much of a $$$ hit to start following. Although it IS full of crossovers into other titles like the Avengers, Hulk etc. But Marvel insists you can just read the main series and be fine. There's a one-issue book called Illuminati that started it all, you would want to read that first.

The DC series JUSTICE by Alex Ross is flat-out excellent (but so is all of Alex's work, especially his legendary epic, Kingdom Come) In my opinion, he's the best artist out there. You'd have to read it from the beginning though- It's currently on Issue #6 and new issues are only once every few months, so you could easily catch up.

In general, the best stuff nowadays is found in the limited series- things like Marvel's ULTIMATES (issues 1-12 have been reprinted in TPB form) and DC's hilarious "Team Formerly known as the Justice League" which is also available in a single volume.

I agree with the classics like Sin City, Dark Knight and the Watchmen too- but I'm guessing you read those long ago.

To start collecting comic books, nothing is better than collecting the classics. A wonderful comic book to start collecting is the SPIDER-MAN comics, followed by SUPERMAN, BATMAN, FANTASTIC FOUR, INCREDIBLE HULK, WONDER WOMAN, and many others from DC Comics or Marvel Comics.

Fell is the best comic out there right now, and each issue is self contained so you can start at anytime. New #1's that are good are The Boys, Justice League of America, and Batman & the Mad Monk.

Just came out this past week "HEROES for HIRE" looks very good---and you know Luke Cage will be there eventually!

Ghost Rider is just 2 issues in and seems like the G.R. of yester-year!

The Creeper and Warlord have just took off from DC.

hope that helps a bit
