Listen to those in the know, and Alastair Cook is destined for great things in the game. A stylish left-handed opener with a simple approach to batting, Cook was thrown straight in the deep end of county cricket with Essex only a year after he left Bedford School, where he broke all sorts of records. He captained England in the 2004 Under-19 World Cup in Bangladesh and scored two centuries while leading them to the semi-finals. He scored his maiden first-class hundred, against Leicestershire at Chelmsford in 2004, and having already impressed the likes of Andy Flower and Darren Gough, his county team-mates, a blossoming future beckons. Following a fine season in 2005, in which he scored a double-century for Essex against the touring Australians, he was voted Cricketer of the Year by the Cricket Writers' Club, and went on to make his England debut in the midst of an injury crisis in India the following spring. He had been touring the Caribbean with the England A squad when the call came but, unfazed, he racked up 60 in his first Test innings, then went one better in the second with a magnificent 104, becoming the 16th England batsman to make a century on debut.

When the MCC were a man short for their game against the school, Cook was drafted in - he scored an unbeaten century against the 1st XI and was in the 1st XI for the next five years. THAT REALLY GEARED HIS CAREER

A most reliable middle order batsman, very useful to the team. Good temperament, we'll see a bit of Cook in the years ahead! A good team mate to have: mature, pleasing personality!
