if you're talking about the college level, you can always go to the tryout as a walk on. Since you mentioned scholarships, you're probably talking about the US. So if you've managed to go unnoticed in your minor league hockey years, you might have a chance to get a scholarship, but if you make the team, there might be a partial available and then there's the more likely that there is no scholarships left and you will be "on" the team. Basically going to practice and maybe never seeing game time.

Well you can try. Also depends on the school. Some don't have alot of scholarships for hockey. So they are more looking for walk-ons. If the team will allow you to try out I'd suggest doing it, you can't lose anything.

You need to play college hockey and the managers of the teams will or might draft you.

Getting into the pros is EXTREMELY difficult. You really have to pay your dues if you aren't one of the elite prospects. You need to build you resume: Juniors, semi-pro, minor league... It really is about exposure to make it to the bigs. Scouts really influence team decisions. I have a friend who is playing minor-pro right now and is hoping for his shot... and he has always been a highly touted player. but every step up, the competition increaced n-fold. You just have to play... and play... and play. Build contacts, who you know will help too.

Both if you play college hockey you can be scouted, if you don't you would go to tryouts, if you get scouted you would still have to tryout.

teams don't have open tryouts. get an agent and he can try to arrange one for you if you aren't drafted.
