I think it's a cop out to blame society for how you feel and think. Women are intelligent minded people and I think it is condescending to say that society controls us in anyway. Society doesn't owe us anything. If you can't drive past a billboard, or watch a commercial without feeling insecure about yourself that is your issue as a human being to deal with. There is all types of people in the world, with different looks. It's up to you to see who you are and what you want to be and go get it and not make excuses. I think if your spirit is in check you won't fall prey to your ego mind and lose your sense of self with the flip of a magazine page. I hope we women stop excusing our mental weakness when it comes to this issue and start taking responsibility for our lives and our minds. If anything we are the victims of oursleves, of our lack of self-understanding. The world is chaotic things happen- but you can't control the world, you can only control your mind.

I believe that culture does have a role to play when it comes the insecurities in women. It also stems from how women were raised and the roles that were fulfilled within the home. But, I think the media plays an even larger role with all the hype and propaganda on the airways. Culture always dictates a set of values expected of us, and those values are constantly changing as our world changes. And, the values of our culture is expressed through the media. Women are expected to do everything, from raising a family to sustaining a prosperous career. And, the demands of those expectations have a tendency to create the insecurities that we witness amongst women today. Insecurity stems from not really knowing who we are as people. Women are so busy trying to make others happy, that they often forget about themselves. More and more, women are turning towards their careers to fulfill their insecurities. In closing, our culture DOES breed insecurity in not just women, but men as well. Stress and the pressure of succeeding fuel these insecurities. Somehow, women need to adapt to these insecurities. Hopefully, women will find coping strategies that will aid relieving these cultural insecurities.

Yes, I absolutely believe that it does. It puts images in the media that send a message that girls need to be thin to be cool, to be accepted, and be liked. Let me tell you something: I'm a size 10, and not only do I have a wonderful husband who wouldn't change me in any way, but I am also a proud member of the United States Army Military Police Corps, a soldier, a defender of the rights and freedoms of the people in this country. I am not judged by my size, but rather by my abilities to perform my job and all activities associated with it. Women of this culture need to learn to love and accept themselves the way they were made, and to not let somebody else's opinion matter. The only people that should matter are the ones that love you and accept you the way you are.

Yes, starting with your family, they speak of the perfect little girl, media introduces the perfect teenager and Hollywood the perfect woman, if you do not fit this criteria your are than imperfect, so our culture creates insecurity in women

Hollywood, men's magazines, a pressure to be thin and beautiful from the time women are young-I would say yes.
But, if women were stronger, they would put these pressures aside and stand firm and not bend to the pressure.
I think more women are headed that way. But cosmetic surgery stats suggest that women still don't like themselves the way they are. And men aren't far behind.

insecurity is the key reason why no one wether men or women can be trusted. security/assurance comes from spending time together (if in a relationship...well any relationship) communicating and accepting personal values/customs/beliefs.
to answer your question no, culture does not breed insecurity in women. one's own culture cannot change who you are or control how you act.

Of course it does especially if they believe all the hype in the media that keeps preaching about how they "need" their advice to fit in.Girls need to be mentored by sane, calm adult women just to counteract the effects of an insane society.Gotta break the cycle of insecurity and dysfunction and help lead the next generation in the right direction.

Maybe. Women have themselves to blame since they are the ones pressing the image in magazines and movies to sell material goods.
