All the audio / video files are recognized by their codecs. Whether you are using realplayer or any other windows media player the codecs are required for the file to be played properly. If you have the proper codecs then any of these files can be played. So first of all download codecs from the net and install them and your problem will be solved otherwise download VLC media player from the net and play the file you will be able play the avi file you have and also using the wizard facility in the VLC media player you can trancode the avi file to any other file type like mpeg or dat .

I am guessing that you have AVI files and you want to make a film? I'm pretty sure that Windows Movie Maker can use AVI?

Windows Movie Maker is 'free' with Windows XP (see link below to update or download it)

If you have a film in AVI and want to know what format to convert the file to, the type of file depends on what you want to do with the film?

Some file types are larger than others etc etc...But if it was for YouTube, MPEG4 is the best format (MPEG4 (Divx, Xvid) format at 320x240 resolution with MP3 audio and a maximum of 100 megs.)
