You could explore your local library with them. Have them pick a classic to read and then watch the 'movie remake' with them and ask them to tell you the differences or similarities.
(if available of course)
Make a special allowance just for the bookstore. A trip to the bookstore is fun for them and you.
Theyre never to old to be read to. Take an old favorite of your own and read it to them and make pauses to discuss certain parts that could pertain to memories or current events.
Discuss why this book was important or memorable to you and what impact it might have had on your life then and now.
A better question is how can we encourage parents to encourage and participate in their childs reading.
Getting involved with your child is never too late.

By being exemplars themselves. Parents are always the first role models of any child. Reading parents will ultimately be emulated by children even at tender ages when all they can understand are pictures. By the time they reach teenage, the passion for reading will still be there even when they have other social events to attend with peers.

Teenagers will read books, the question is what are the books about. If you just want them to read books find books that interest them.

You have to find the areas that int rest them. Some kids may be into sports, have them read something in that area. Some may like WW2 have them read an Ambrose book. I always have been an avid reader, but somehow I found it drudgery to get through a book I had not int rest in. I wish my teachers had not forced some of the so called classics on us, and then spent the whole period discussing it. It was a double whammy.

With the example, and the books don't got to be stored in a complex place at home. I had a friend and in his house the books are found in everywhere, EVERYWHERE. That's good! even in the keys-holder at the door, little books iF you want to choose one before you go!

Parents can encourage kids to read by getting them material that they can relate to.
(magazines)
Do not force them or punish them by reading because it could make them hate it.

Read to them, have them read to you. Take them to the library and use the resources there. Usually there are children's programs as well. Get them involved in a book club.
