i've been told that the more the gas polutes the environment the weaker the atmosphere gets and remember it is what protects the earth from various things.

There are many different gases which pollute the atmosphere due to man's activities and a variety of effects. Some examples are carbon dioxide, methane, oxides of sulphur, oxides of nitrogen and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). The effects they may cause are global warming (trapping the sun's heat), damaging the ozone layer which protects people from harmful radiation, acid rain or localised pollution which may cause respiratory problems.

I presume when you talk about weakening the atmosphere you are referring to damage to the ozone layer. In many places in the world a lot of work has gone into phasing out the use of CFCs which are the chief culprit here.

Of the other gases I mentioned carbon dioxide emissions are the biggest and most expensive problem to solve however a variety of approaches are being used:

- alternative sources of energy to fossil fuels
- energy efficiency measures
- carbon dioxide sequestration in underground reservoirs

A simple way of understanding it is that, CFCs (chloro-fluro carbon)
are harmful to the ozone layer. These CFCs deplete the ozone layer. The ozone layer blocks out most of the ultraviolet rays from the Sun and back to space. Ultraviolet is harmful to people. They can break the chemical bonds and can cause cancer, i remember reading it some book. An example is skin cancer. Ultraviolet is an electromagnetic ray by the way.
An another gas that is causing trouble is carbon dioxide. There is more carbon dioxide in Earth. More carbon dioxide results in more heat being trapped in Earth and the temperature changes. The climatic patterns will also change like for example, the weather in Singapore in Decmber was very rainy. Now in Singapore there is not much rain in December. these changes can cause drastic changes in ecosystem and as well as the environment. The ice glaciers in the North and South poles are beginning to melt. The sea level is rising. So these are 2 examples of the harmful gases. Even though carbon dioxide is trapping heat it is also necessary for plants to photosynthesise. So they cant do anything about it. As for CFCs, i think they are reducing the usage of products that contain CFCs.

Lots of different gases are added to the atmosphere by various different processes. Some, such as Freon 12, have been replaced by other gases in refrigeration. Others, such as sulfur dioxide, are usually trapped by treatment with lime. The most controversial gas is carbon dioxide, which is released by almost anything people do, and cannot be economically trapped. Many people suspect that the increasing level of carbon dioxide in the air will cause the earth's temperature to rise, but this is not proven as the earth's temperature has been changing for many reasons since the day it was made. Efforts to reach agreement on means to control carbon dioxide emissions have had little success.

it's not really they..."they" will keep making stuff that pollutes for you to buy as long as it makes them money. It's more up to you and me to not buy and use stuff that pollutes.
