In some cases it is because our hearts say one thing, but our heads know better. The heart is very powerful in telling us what it wants, but if you know the outcome would not be good you are better to listen to your head and find a way to move away from those emotional yearnings.

If you are feeling a little depressed it can help you get over it by trying to find something to over ride the feelings you have and try to look for something to snap you out of your glum mood.

Feelings can also be mentally shut off when your pain/fear is too great and your head doesn't want to deal with them.

Sometimes also we repress our feelings to avoid hurting or upsetting another person. There are quite a number of reasons why we do this when you come to think about it.

one possibility is that living in a hyper materialistic, left brained, rational, scientific, very yang, unbalanced, and toxic culture, the way of the heart/emotions is not only not valued, but is positively unsupported. if you get too emotional, "the terrorists will have already won" ( a little joke, eh?--guidance for the humorless). as you may have also noted, the arts,a right brain, "heart" rather than head activity, are also being denigrated and viewed as a ridiculous waste of time and money, vis a vis public /gov't, support, by the corporatists and other fascist elements of the "ruling class". i believe we may well be in the decline and fall phase of empire at this point; but i'm no expert in the matter. ;-)

emotions are designed to release kind of chemicals required to face particular situations. this designs were formed many years before and we realize that with the changed situations of today's life style ( from jungle to city) these chemicals some times become counter productive so there is now realization of the growing need to control the emotions.

We don't. That's why humanity is where it is today. Try stuffing that crap down a little bit if you want to see 2007...
