There was a great little place back in my old home state that made General Tso's chicken. The only thing I can find here in So Cal is Orange chicken, which is similar, but not the same. Does anyone know of a good place to get good General Tso's here?

I always wondered about that. I can find General Tso's Chicken in East coast, but here in Los Angeles, it's all about Orange Chicken. And, you are right that they do taste similar. I remember General Tso's was a lot spicier, and less sweeter than Orange Chicken. However, I'm sure that the recipes vary among chinese chefs. I recall seeing totally different General Tso's Chicken in Florida......
I believe it's a regional difference. In the US, Orange Chicken is a variation of General Tso's, so the restaurant do not have both on their menu. See the wikipedia link below.
Yang Chow has General Tseng's Chicken on their menu, and I think it's a different spelling of a same Chinese dish (or a General).
But, I believe you are going to encounter a dish slightly different from the one you fondly remember. Enjoy for what it is.

OK! I am a fan of 'The General'! They spell it General Tsuo's Chicken, General Suos,Tswaos, lots of General's names and it's served in many Chinese restaurants here in LA.

But (sorry!) THE BEST I've ever had is in San Francisco, a place called Taiwan. Huge menu with a mainly Asian crowd plus a few 'round eyes' like me, an excellent sign of a real authentic ethnic restaurant. Challenging food on the menu like Jellyfish and Sea Slugs but I'm not brave enough to try them. Are you?

Most of The General's Chicken I've had is made similarly with chicken dusted, not with flour, but with corn starch, ginger, garlic, sugar, soy, chiles, chicken stock & crunchy bits and probably more.

Taiwan in San Francisco just does it the best!

I've seen "General Chicken" and "General Tao" chicken at Chen's Szechuwan in Thousand Oaks, and Szechuwan Garden in Moorpark and Simi Valley.

I thought I saw this item on the menu at either Panda Inn or PF Chang's. I looked on their online menus, but didn't see it listed :(

Another place to try is Yang Chow (Chinatown).
