Please do me a couple favors. First, please IGNORE the nasty comments made by some here. Possibly those people are blessed with perfect figures. They will see how difficult it is to maintain once they hit their mid-20s. Take some comfort in that Heehee. Secondly, please consider that society forces upon us a very strict rule of what we 'should' look like. It is not neccessarily realistic and in some cases its quite unattractive. I've had a number of guys tell me over the years that they really think models are way to skinny. Be the size that's right for you, whatever is healthy.
That said, its really hard to objectify what styles and colors will make u look slimmer and feel good about how you look. Black is good, yes, but you can't go around in black all the time (well, I can't). Navy is nice too, and magenta. Hunter green is good. You probably want to stay away from the pastels and white too. One trick I learned is that diagonal lines do amazing things. They look very chic and draw the eye downward. So a diagonal cut shirt, or skirt really looks great. Tight clothes are not your friends. Wear slacks instead of jeans, shells and over-shirts instead of t-shirts. Save your sweat pants for when you are exercising. Dressing neatly and with class will go a long way towards making you feel happy and comfortable with your look, even if you aren't a size 6.

Two words for a fabulous sort of top:
Empire waist.
Any female with anything but a flat stomach can now breathe.
An empire waist top has a definition between the bust and the rest of the shirt, like a ribbon, but often as not, just a seam that takes in the top just below your breasts. This kind of top also often gets a little loose around your stomach. It does four things:
Gives you curves like crazy
Makes your bust look huge [as long as it isn't loose at the bust]
Makes your tummy smaller
Gives you crazy style
I cannot even begin to tell you how great these kinds of tops are. They come in halter, strapless, long sleeve, shortsleeve, casual, and work-worthy. They come in a lot of different styles, patterns, fabrics, and designs. You can find them being sold in most stores, but you have to look for the one that is right for you. If it doesn't come in enough just below your bust, it could just end up looking bad. Even if the tummy part isn't as loose as you'd like it to be, it still really works.
I hear skinny jeans actually work for all body types and knock off inches, but I'm too chicken to try it. Let me know how that works out for you!

well, it depends on how you look right now. first of all try loosing some weight if it makes you quite uncomfortable.
as for apparel, first avoid stipes that run from side to side, avoid really large clothes, avoid too bright clothes, and wear stuff that bring out the best in you at all times, not just once in a while.
the most important however is to feel good about yourself, maybe a little exercise could give that feeling or just loving yourself more, like I do.

Wear black clothes, don't wear horizontal stripes. Don't wear 3/4 trousers, full length with heels or wedges make you look taller and slimmer. Wear clothes that go in at the waist, straight down shapeless tops and dresses give you no waistline and make you look fatter. Don't wear skin tight clothes but they should fit nicely. Don't wear polo necks, they are so unflattering on most people except skinny. Stand up straight and pull in your stomach, bad posture can make you look much fatter!

Wear striped clothes...
Why?????? Dont make that face...
Stripes are magical....i am sure you never knew that...
Stripes or Lines or anything flowing from top to bottom make the appearence of the person wearing it look more sleek and the best part TALL...
But if the stripes or lines is flowing from left to right or vice versa then you end up looking fat and ugly...
Avoid wearing anything Checkered if you are consious of looking fat...cause checkered clothes are the worst of the lot to make you look fat and ugly - may be you should leave them for EMINEM or some Rapper....

Wear outfits where all the pieces are the same color. If you wear stripes, make sure they are vertical, it will elongate the body. In pictures, if you turn 3/4 of the way to one side, it will show your smallest side. Be sure to suck in your stomach and straighten your back. Good posture always helps to look slimmer.

Stand up straight and hold your stomach in, slouching adds pounds on!
wear clothes that fit, trying to squeeze into a size too small will makes everything bulge out and you will look fatter.

Darker colored clothing and tailored more fitting to your body type clothes. Avoid wide stripes and go to accentuate the length of your body. With pants, go for the right pair that suits your body, not everyone can wear skinnys or flares.
