linguistics--plural noun treated as sing. the scientific study of language and its structure.

Linguistics study would include a class like this: Applied and Theoretical Linguistics. Intensive study of specialized areas in English linguistics.

philology-- the study of the structure, historical development, and relationships of a language or languages

phonetics-- plural noun treated as sing. the study and classification of speech sounds.

In college, this would included courses like this one:
Phonetics and Phonology. Articulatory and linguistic phonetics, phonetic transcription, suprasegmental phonology, overview of English phonology, and information on teaching English pronunciation to speakers of other languages.

Philology is the study of a language together with its literature and the historical and cultural contexts so that you have a deeper understanding of the language and where its expressions come from . Phonetics is the study of speech sounds - some languages have speech sounds that others don't have and phonetics attempts to study these sounds and write them down.

Philology and linguistics both study languages, from different points of view--the focus of philology is more on the history, and linguistics more on the theory.
