I've had a possum living in my garage for some time now. I rarely see him/her, but the dry cat food was dissapearing too fast for one cat, things were knocked over a lot and one time, I saw a rat like tail jet out from under the steps. I have a bunch of boxes out there so I can't really see where it's been living.
Tonite, it came out while I was having a smoke on the back lawn and I saw the little (well actually bigger than my cat) sucker eye to eye as it sat on the trunk of my ivy. I shut the garage door, so maybe it won't be able to get back in and will go away...but I doubt it, because it's been well fed and comfy in my garage for near a year.
I don't want to kill it...I just want it out of my garage.
Any NON VIOLENT suggestions???

Besides injured animal calls, this is next most frequent call I get in dealing with wildlife. First, do not fear the opossum. Generally they are docile; they will open their mouth and hiss/spit at you as a scare tactic (this usually works well as an intimidation factor); they can/will bite you if they feel cornered.

Second, is it possible for you to stop feeding your cat outside? Feeding pets outdoors attracts all sorts of wildlife. I'm guessing if you have an opossum, the next thing you will have are raccoons (which can attack/kill cats in competition for food). Stopping the feeding outside, will result in the opossum in leaving. No food = no reason to hang around.

To know if the opossum has left the garage: before dark, sprinkle flour at the edge of your garage (the entire section). You will see the foot prints in the flour heading away from the garage and then you can close the door. You will have to stay awake for some time that night to ensure that it has left.

I would also suggest only feeding your cat during daylight hours, when wildlife are less likely to visit. If your garage is one that is open all the time, you can use ammonia soaked rags in there as a humane deterrent. Be sure to move the food as to not upset the cat as well.

Hope that this helps. Feel free to email me with any other questions/concerns you may have.

Call the health department, or animal control of the department of wildlife and fisheries. They will usually loan you a trap.

Get a Hav-a-Hart trap, and when you catch it, call for pickup or carry it in.

They can be extremely vicious. Hav-a-Hart is a brand name, but those services may provide a different brand name.

Usually doesn't cost anything, and some of those agencies will release it into the wild, or you could drive far away from your house and release it yourself. Use a string to open the cage, because it may not be happy, and it may not be bad to pull the string to open the cage from the safety of your auto.

Well I 'll tell ya pilgrim, that there o'possum ain't a'gonna hurt a fly, from my point of view, and I am not, repeat,am not,a professional, but you might want to put the cat food in a seal container, something like a trash can [with a lid]or a cooler[with a lid also],them there varmits will just mosey right on over to your neighbors house, especially if you start dumping your garbage over there on their lawn, near there garage.hee,hee,hee.

Call the game commissioner or agency in your area. They will assist you as to the best methods of capturing it. They may even provide you with bait and trap(s) to catch it. They may even do all the work for you and then haul the critter out to the woods and release it.

They should have in your area a "Humane Trapper" service of some kind. You might try there. Whatever you do avoid cornering the sucker. Believe it, or not they can be mean when cornered.

Try the trapper or you can get a cage yourself and try to trap it yourself. Try a local coop if you have one near you.
