Great question!!!! I was wondering the same thing myself. The only thing I can think of......is that because he was with the army, the army was able to take him there instead of him walking. I really think they just did not want to kill him off because he was a crowd "favorite" for his cute looks (and big eyes)........they had to keep him alive. Kind of like the Egyptian warrior from "The Mummy". Originally he was supposed to die, but then they brought him back after initial reviews because people (women) liked his character and he was too good looking....... Just a thought.

No you didn't miss anything.....its probable that the son-who ran off to go with the army, just followed the army to Boston, during a war like that the army would have better transportation than the civilians --so the son would find it easier to get there than dad -who was carrying the daughter.

One of the worst films ever. A case of, 'lets make (another) movie of a struggling one parent family, we'll put Tom Cruise in it, he's popular with the chicks and then they won't notice the sh*t story. We'll chuck in War of the Worlds, with lots of special effects for the guys.

Get the special edition DVD of The War of the Worlds (1953) it's great.

Ah....that's just one of those "lucky breaks" Tom, Dakota (Fanning) and Ryan all shared to end the film with. How such happened is left up to us to fill in....use our imaginations.

Yah he ran off with the army, but I just assumed that they saw to it that he got home safely.

He just showed up with no explanation . If you fell asleep it is very understandable that movie was awful.
