Whenever my friend tries to sign on to MSN Instant Messenger it says that he can't because he has a firewall. This does not make sense because he doesn't have a firewall. When he tries to sign on with Yahoo! Messenger it just sends him straight back to the sign in screen when he presses "Sign In"... Can someone please help me out? Give me some suggestions, I'll try anything and so will he. It is his first time using an Instant Messenger. Thanks.

It's unlikely, but perhaps Microsoft's own "Windows Firewall" is enabled and blocking access to its MSN Messenger application.

FYI: Firewalls can be both hardware and software based.

If an internet router is being used for the internet connection, believe it or not, by default you are firewalled.

Its also possible, but again unlikely, that the ISP is blocking the ports used by MSNIM.

I may be old fashioned, but you shouldn't need an unfirewalled internet connection to use an instant messaging application. Try looking around the options screen for a "passive" connection setting or a "Firewalled" checkbox.

Tell your friend when he is trying to open Yahoo Messenger, click the word 'Messenger' at the top of the sign in box . then to click on 'connections' when he does this he will see choices, he should check the box 'no Proxies, then click 'Apply' Hopefully that will enable him to log in. If he still can't, tell him to get a computer engineer to check his settings for him.

On your menu bar, click on "tools" and choose "internet options" and then check on your "privacy" and "security" settings. You might wanna put everyhting on default to see where the problem really is.
