I did 3 times and beleive me... your in soooo much pain that you don't even feel the needle. Doctors will tell you that it doesn't hurt the baby.Plus why not? If you have the option to not feel the pain, why not just go with it? Scientoligist and some people in the medical field think it's tramatic for the mother to be soo stressed out and yelling and screaming while trying to give birth.when your so tensed up like that your muscles tighten up, making it that much harder to push the baby out....... but only you will know if you can handle the pain or not, and I wish you luck ;)

I didn't and here's why: Everything I read said that it'd slow down my labor, so they'd have to give me more pitocin. Then, it might cause my blood pressure to go high or low (can't remember which), so they'd have to give me drugs to solve that. The baby's heart level would go down, so they'd have to monitor that the entire labor. Then, the medicine would prevent me from feeling the urge to push, which could lead to a really long time pushing. If the pushing went too long, they'd have to use forcepts or the vacuum...and they may even take me in for a C-section. Both of my sis-in-laws had the epidural. The 1st's labor was 14.5 hours long, she pushed for 2 hours, and had a C-section. The 2nd's labor was really long, she pushed for 3 hours, they wanted to give her a C-section, but she finally gave birth.
I did it without the epidural (they gave me 2 doses of phentenol instead)-- My labor went quickly (10.5 hours) & I pushed him out in 10 minutes. The baby was given a 9.9 APGAR score.
If you can find an alternative way to manage the pain (naturally or through some different drugs), you may find that your labor goes much more smoothly. My suggestion? Decide for sure before you go into labor. If you think you may want the epidural, you'll definitely want it when you're in labor.
Good luck!

I had my last son 7 months ago and I chose to have an epidural with him, my other two boys, I had natural. The epidural had it's pros and cons. I have a fairly high threshold to pain and it did hurt when they put the catheder in your back and look for the correct area. My two other labors lasted no more than 5 hours, my last one lasted 10 hours, I had to be given Pitocin, because the epidural slowed my labor down. You cant move your legs, you cant scoot your butt down or move yourself while lying there, nurses have to move you. Nurses and doctor have to tell you when to push, because you can't feel that either- only good thing about it, is- you dont have much pain.

If I could birth a 10lb baby my first time, without an epidural, I don't think I'll need one for my 3rd baby. Besides, I don't like not being able to feel my body parts. I go through that the entire pregnancy as it is, I don't want to make myself feel that way. No thanks.

I plan on holding out for as long as I can but if the pain is really intense and I feel like I can't handle it than yes, I absolutely will. This is my first pregnancy so I don't know what to expect. Some people say that the pain is bad but not unmanagable and others say that it's like nothing you can even begin to prepare yourself for. I think it all depends on how focused and calm you can stay and how much you can tolerate. Also how fast your labor progresses and how long it goes on for. I don't really see any downside to having one but I would still prefer to deliver as natuarlly as possible. I doubt I'll last very long without it, though.

well when i was pregnant with my son Blake i said id never have any sort of drugs but the pain was unbearable, but i dont have a very high pain threshold. i am due in 2 1/2 months with my second and again i hope i dont need any thing but we'll see what happens. there is always gas but that done nothing for me but make me vomit. but i dont mind along as my baby isborn safely and healthy thats the most important thing.

I planned on getting one for SURE, but when I got to the hospital, there wasn't an anesthesiologist available, so I felt everything. Then the last hour the doctor said, "the baby's stuck" so I had to have a c-section anyways. bummer huh? Why am I complaining???????? I love love love- my baby.

okay with all of my kids i had an epideral i wouldnt recommend it though because im paying for it now i have had lots of problems with my back ever since. there are many other pain methods and an epideral doesnt always take away all the pain it depends on how quick your labor is and whoever puts it in because sometime they dont hit just right and it only takes away the pain on one side and giving birth isnt bad its just the contractions that wear u out and hurt the worst. im sorry to be the burden of bad news but it doesnt always help trust me ive had 3 of them. it all just depends but there are other pain meds to help if needed it also depends on the tolerance u have to pain meds good luck.

Did for the first. Refused it for my second and third children. And I'll not get one again. I hate needles more than I hate pain.
