Yes - but is what you do from that moment on that counts. Anyone can show up with scissors.

My husband was forced out of the delivery room due to an emergency c-section because we almost lost our son so he did not get to cut the cord. We are going to try to get pregnant again in 6 months...son will be 2 1/2 and hopefully it will go better next time.

my husband, fred, was there for the birth of both of his sons. he cut the cord both times. when he cut the cord for our first son, he commented that it was harder to cut than he thought it would be. if you are thinking about doing it after the birth of your child, i would encourage you to cut the cord. birth is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. i guarantee you wont forget it.

My husband didn't. He told me this practically from day one. He said the thought of it sort of "creeped him out." He also said he wasn't going to watch the baby being born--he was going to hang out by the head of the bed and offer me moral support. I'll have you know he was right beside my knees staring at my crotch. LOL The nurse made him sit down in a chair next to the bed though. He didn't look peaked, but I guess a lot of men don't, then they faint suddenly. He didn't faint though--just finished watching the birth in the mirror. :)

Nope, it isn't common practice in Japan for fathers to even be in the delivery room. They are expected to be working at their office as to not inconveience all their fellow emplyees.

I sure did! I asked the doctor if I got a discount since I was doing his job, he just laughed at me.
