Bob Probert. In his prime i don't think there was anyone better. He always seemed to get stronger the longer the fight lasted.

Well. I gotta go with Probert. And I'm not even a wings fan. This guy in his prime, was hands down not only the meanest but most skilled fighter I've ever seen. Any of you who remember him will remember his patience. There would be times you'd think he was gonna lose then this 2nd wind would come out of nowhere. If not him, then it's definitely Tie Domi. Tie is definitely the smartest fighter the game has ever seen. He used his lack of size to his advantage. Very sturdy on his skates and always fought bigger men.

C'mon people! I hate to go old-school on everyone, but the best fighter wasn't from the last 10 years! Probert definitely gets some run, but people are forgetting about Tiger Willams and Dave Schultz from the old Broad Street Bullies!

But the best of ALL TIME? One Mr. Gordon Howe. He beat Lou Fontinato so bad he moved his nose to the side of his face. (And pretty much ended his career.) Gordie was the best by a mile.

Boom Boom Beukeboom? Sorry, but Bernie Geoffrion owns the "Boom Boom" nickname.

Tony Twist was so short term he doesn't deserve much pub.

Tie is pretty tough, but he doesn't dominate like others, just because you get INTO fights, doesn't make you a great fighter.

The toughest fighter I have ever seen was Tony Twist. He certainly was not in the league because he could skate. He threw with bad intentions and could really hurt you when he hit. He was in the league to fight , but after his rookie season he did not have that many fighting majors because no one wanted to go near him. I remember being at a Ranger , Nordique game when Troy Mallete was a rookie and fighting everyone, He went with Twist and out of nowhere it was over, He just pancaked Mallete. The second best guy I have ever seen on pure punching power was Joey Kocur. He did not fight that much because again he did not get challenged that much. He was the only deterrent a team needed, he literally could break bones in your face, see Brad Delgarno. Jarkko Ruttu , come on Dark Angel you are a great fan , but the guy would get pounded by the tough guys in the league. He wears a shield doesn't he?

The best ever is a toss up between two guys in different eras. Terrible Ted Lindsay and Dave the hammer Shultz. Nobody beat these guys and Lindsay may have the toughest SOB ever to play hockey. By the way, if you want to read a great hockey book, read the Hammer by Dave Shultz. He talks about his time in Philly. It is great and I absolutely despise the Flyers.

Of active players: Tie Domi, he is small at only 5' 6" but can destroy much larger guys and has been called a psychopath.

Dale Hunter, formerly of the Capitals, had been leading the league for career penalty minutes

Of all time probably: Gordie Howe although he was always big at over 6' tall and 200lbs. The opposing players would apologize for checking him saying "sorry mr. howe"

Lots of legendary fighters from Dave Shultz to Dave "Cementhead" Semenko to Stu "The Grim Reaper" Grimson and then there was Jimmy Mann who bit someone ear off in a fight in Quebec one time

In the current NHL I'd have to say the best fighter is Jarome Iginla. Not only can he hurt you with his stick (by scoring goals, that is), but if you cross him or any of his teammates, he'll have something for you. It's not uncommon for Iggy to find himself with a Gordie Howe hat trick (Goal, Assist, Fight). Iggy is the man!

Best of all time ... Gotta go with Bob Probert or Stu Grimson. Honorable mention to John Kordic for being one crazy M.F!

John Ferguson. Prior to his joining the Habs, the team and many of its flashy stars were getting pounded and physically intimidated. He is the guy who the original "policeman" term really was coined for.

The Habs went on to dominate in the '60s and '70s thanks to his intimidation factor.

I would also rate Gordie Howe and Cam Neely right up there as they destroyed guys whomever they fought. Both fought so rarely though as they did not need to.
