1/3(9b - 36)= -9
1. get rid of the parantheses by multiplying 1/3 to 9b and -36
3b - 12= -9
2. isolate the "b" (step 1)
3b - 12 = -9
+ 12 +12
-------------------
3b = 3
3. isolate the "b" (step 2)
3b/3 = 3/3 3b diveded by 3 = 3 divided by 3
The answer is... b= 1

3/4(4x+8)= -12
1. 3x + 6 = -12
2. 3x = -18
3. x = -6

1/2(4 - 6x)= 8
1. 2 - 3x = 8
2. -3x = 6
3. x = -2

-3d + 1/3(6 + 3d = -10
1. -3d +2 + d = -10
2. -2d + 2 = -10
3. -2d = -12
4. d = 6

1/2(8a + 12) - 27 = 15
1. 4a + 6 - 27 = 15
2. 4a - 21 = 15
3. 4a = 36
4. a = 9

3x + 2(x + 4 = -7
1. 3x + 2x + 8 = -7
2. 5x + 8 = -7
3. 5x = -15
4. x = -3

6a + 6(a + 6) = 120
1. 6a + 6a + 36 = 120
2. 12a + 36 = 120
3. 12a = 84
4. a = 7

Maybe some one else will answer the last two for you; I would but it's really late here. Good luck. Let me know how your test turned out; I will be "rooting" for you. ;)
Check my answers. don't accept them as correct whithout checking them. :)

Stuffed Animals...these types (sold 6 more...) of questions are always done the same.

Take the item number in excess and multiple it by the amount.

1. 6 more rabbits at $6 each = $36

2. Now subtract that from the total amount ($120 - $36 = $84)

3. If we divide $84 by $6 we get 14 OR animals left.

4. Okay, so we already took the six extra rabbits out in step 2 so we divide the 14 animals left by 2 (half rabbits, half monkeys) and get 7.

SO your answer is...you sold 13 Rabbits and 7 Monkeys.

You can check your answer by multiplying $6 x 13 and $6 x 7 and see if they add to $120.

For the word problems, make an equation. For the first one, let's call monkeys M and rabbits M+6, because there are 6 more rabbits than monkeys.

Since each rabbit and each monkey is worth $6, multiply each by 6. Since the total is $120, add these.

6M + 6(M+6) = 120

Now multiply out the parentheses.

6M + 6M +36 = 120
12M + 36 = 120

Subtract 36 from both sides to isolate the variable M on the left.

12M = 84

Divide both sides by 12.

M = 7

Since M is the number of monkeys, 7 monkeys were sold. Since the number of rabbits sold was six more, 13 rabbits were sold.

*******

Now for the books problem.Let's call hardback books H and paperback books 8-H because out of the eight books, all the ones that aren't hardbacks are paperbacks.

So now, same type of equation. The total is $44, but each type of book costs a different amount of money. Multiply each by the variable we named it.

8H + 4(8-H) = 44

Now multiply the parentheses out and add together the H's.

8H + 32 + (-4H) = 44
4H + 32 = 44

Subtract 32 from both sides.

4H=12
so
H=3

Since she bought 3 hardback books out of 8, the other 5 must be paperbacks.

I hope that helps you figure out the other problems. Good luck on your test!

answer: 3

3/4(4X+8)=-12 3(4X+8)=-48 4X+8=16 4X=8
answer: 2

The rest are done the same way. Have fun.

First word problem:
X+6=monkeys X=rabbits both@$6 each
(2X+6)6=120 2X+6=60 2X=54 X=27
answer: 27 rabbits and 33 monkeys

Do and learn.....and, yes, even if you never sell rabbits and monkeys, these exercises will teach you to better analyze the problems you'll face on a daily basis throughout your entire life.
